This article talks about an ongoing issue in Alachua County: the surprising amount of people who are going without food. This article includes commentary from CEO's of companies created with the goal of helping the hungry. Overall, the sentiment of these CEO's is that people are not aware of the lack of access to food. However, Karen Woolfstead (development and communication director at Bread of the Mighty, a company devoted to helping the food crisis) stated that the issue was not a lack of food, but that some people have no way to access this food. People may be unable to transport themselves to the food locations, or even be aware of locations that they could find food.

The Problem: Many people in Alachua County, including children, do not have enough food to sustain themselves, and do not have the means to purchase food, or the ability to reach locations which will provide them food.

The People Affected: Those who live in Alachua County, and may not have stable jobs / a home / the means to purchase food. People devoting themselves to try and provide food to all in need have issues with the food reaching those people.

Bob's River Place, a location which provides different activities (slides, rope swings, docks) is in a conflict against the Suwannee River Water Management District (SRWMD). The SRWMD are requiring Bob's River Place to undergo several inspections to assure that all of the attractions are up to code and safe. This inspection includes a very pricey engineering study, alongside many other safety measures. According to the owner of Bob's River Place, he is complying with all of the regulations set in place by the SRWMD, but they keep providing him with more as he passes them.

The Problem: the SRWMD are requiring continuous requests of Bob's River Place to assure that they are up to code, as they believe there could be some potential safety issues with his attractions.

The People Affected: All employee's of Bob's River Place. All people assigned to the case of assuring that the inspections are accurately done, and that all regulations are followed.

Link: https://infoweb.newsbank.com/apps/news/document-view?p=WORLDNEWS&t=stp%3ANewspaper%21Newspaper&sort=YMD_date%3AD&maxresults=20&f=advanced&val-base-0=Miami%20problem&fld-base-0=alltext&docref=news/16E6E1F00D38E340

This article speaks about an ongoing issue regarding toxic algae that is present in Southern Florida waters. Businesses in the areas affected by this algae are reporting that tourist traffic has been declining, and workers are having to be laid off as there is no money to be made. Many of the business owners have made contact with Senator Bill Nelson, asking him to provide some form of financial assistance to keep them afloat during this so dubbed "water crisis". Many of them have to fix damages to their waterfront properties, and say that a tax deduction would greatly assist them in being able to afford that. Many of the companies also noted issues with water quality, which is a main factor in scaring away tourists from the businesses.

The Problem: Toxic algae located within the waters of South Florida are harming many of the business owners. This algae damages there properties, reduces the clean water supply, and slows down the amount of tourist (and thus income) that the business make.

The People Affected: All owners of businesses in the areas affected by this algae, specifically small business owners who do not have the capital to stay afloat when they are losing much of their traffic. Fisherman are having their fishes killed by the algae, and are unable to provide for their families.

"Amazon HQ2 Could Create Apartment Crunch - Rental Inventory In Region Deficient"
Link: https://infoweb.newsbank.com/apps/news/document-view?p=WORLDNEWS&t=stp%3ANewspaper%21Newspaper&sort=YMD_date%3AD&maxresults=20&f=advanced&val-base-0=Miami%20problem&fld-base-0=alltext&docref=news/16E6E4772869FA50

This article speaks about the need for more housing in Pittsburgh, a potential location for a new Amazon Headquarters. It is expected that this headquarters would bring over 50,000 jobs to the Pittsburgh area, alongside over 5 billion dollars in investment money. This also proposes an issue regarding the rent prices. Currently, Pittsburgh has one of the lowest rent prices on average. However, a new headquarters could create a situation much like the one that occurred in Seattle, where rent jumped 47.2% after a booming industry was introduced there.

The Problem: There are currently not enough apartments/housing to handle the amount of people that may soon be living in Pittsburgh. There is also a possible issue where the rent prices may rise dramatically if the city does not adequately prepare for this influx of people.

The People Affected: All those who currently pay rent in Pittsburgh. Anybody who plans to move to Pittsburgh in the future (as they may have trouble finding housing). Politicians who have to assure that the rent does not get to high, or people will be left without affordable housing.

Many girls in South Florida (and all over the world) are dealing with issues regarding the lack of availability of menstrual products. A company in South Florida is currently trying to create hygiene kits, and find the best possible way to provide them to girls in need. They are reaching out to volunteers to help create these kits, but there is still not enough material available to provide all the girls the menstrual care products they need.

The Problem: There is a lack of availability and affordability in many of the menstrual care products that women need, leading them to run into personal hygiene issues, along with missing work/school.

The People Affected: All women who struggle to come across / purchase menstrual care products.

  1. Hello Schuyler,
I also did choose the article "Hunger in Alachua County is real, but groups work to help" as a local opportunity. The fact that people do not have any transportation in order to get some food made me realize that there is some kind of opportunity which would allow them to get their food. Unfortunately, I believe that there also is an important amount of people who do not have any financial means to afford food, which would give us the opportunity of coming with a way of raising more money into charity or giving job opportunities for those who are in good mentally and physically shape.

  2. Hey Schuyler,
I found that "Hunger in Alachua County is real" article incredibly interesting. Just by the way that I am able to live, I was not aware that food shortages were an issue for certain families. Having learned that, I am definitely going to try and volunteer my time to help those around us who really need the help.
