Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future
One of the things that surprised me the most about Elon Musk was his competency in the field of computer science, along with his skills in business. I had always been told that most CEO's got to their position through luck, bu tit seems like Elon Musk is someone who has the skills needed to succeed in the industry. I admire Elon's motivations in his business ventures. He is someone determined to further humanity's presence in the Solar System, and develop technology to benefit humanity. I do not admire the recent ongoings that occured with Elon Musk, specifically about the issue regarding the rescue of the children in the cave in Thailand. He made comments which are not appropriate, and was trying too hard to play the hero.
Elon Musk has faced many adversities during his business career, specifically regarding SpaceX rockets. His Falcon 1 rocket has failed many times in his career, but he kept trying, even while he was facing financial adversity. He is undergoing some current struggles regarding the stock of his company Tesla, but is still moving on forward and attempting to grow the company.
As stated previously, the autobiography claims Elon Musk's competencies to be mainly present in Computer Science related fields (used in the development of his services like Paypal) and social skills/business IQ.
While reading this biography, I was confused by the way in which he portrayed his success as being all down to hard work, as opposed to involving some luck. It seemed as if it was written so that it would be approved by him, and not necessarily a full biography of his life.
I would ask him "what are your thoughts on the current state of capitalism?" and "What do you think was the driving factor that motivated you in your business ventures"
I think that the entrepreneur see's work as a necessary means to achieve success, and does not necessarily consider his business ventures as "work" in the way that normal people do. I agree with him, and am trying to have a job which I can consider fun, and my "work" will bring me success, as opposed to just a paycheck.

ReplyDeleteIt was interesting for me to see that you admire Musk because he got to his position by skill. After reading different autobiographies and biographies of various successful figures, I started to realize that there may be some lucky occurrences that get a CEO to their position but that it isn't luck. It also is very interesting that he is so successful and knowledgeable in both computer science and business, two very different and difficult fields. This description of the book really made me interested in reading it.

ReplyDeleteI believe you did a great job answering these questions since you gave me the interest in reading this book as well. It is remarkable that Mr. Musk is not only a successful businessman but also has deep knowledge in computer science. The most astonishing aspect about your answers is for me, that even though Mr. Mask is extremely wealthy and could be enjoying life in a million different ways, he still works on his passions like Space X, even though people might believe that it is a complete loss of money and time.
